Get ready to dive into the beauty of nature and the joy of exploration as I share our unforgettable journey!
Setting off from Shillong: Leaving the busy city of Shillong, my family and I set off on a road trip to Nongkhnum River Island. We traveled about 80 to 90 kilometers, which took us around 3.5 to 4 hours. The drive began with beautiful hill roads, surrounded by lush greenery and misty mountains. As we passed through charming villages and saw cascading waterfalls, we felt a growing sense of excitement and anticipation!
Scenic Delights of West Khasi Hills: The route to Nongkhnum River Island took us through the breathtaking West Khasi Hills. As we drove along the winding roads, we couldn’t help but marvel at the stunning landscapes around us. With rolling hills, terraced fields, and dense forests, it felt like a scene straight out of a painting, bringing a sense of peace and calm.
As we got closer to our destination, the excitement grew. We finally arrived in Nongstoin, a small town that acts as the gateway to the island. From here, we had about another 15-20 kilometers to go. It's worth noting that the road from Nongstoin to Nongkhnum River Island can be a bit tricky. In 2018, it wasn’t well-maintained, so some parts were rough, uneven, and had potholes, especially during the monsoon season. But the adventure was all part of the journey!
Arriving at Nongkhnum River Island: After an exciting 15-20 kilometer drive from Nongstoin, we finally arrived at Nongkhnum River Island. Stepping onto the island, we were greeted by a stunning view of emerald-green meadows, gently flowing rivers, and a calmness that filled the air. The island’s unspoiled beauty and peaceful vibe felt like a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, instantly putting me at ease.
Exploring the Island's Treasures: We spent our time on Nongkhnum River Island exploring its hidden gems. Walking along the riverbanks, we enjoyed the soothing sounds of nature and embraced moments of peace. For those looking for adventure, Nongkhnum River Island had plenty to offer! There were thrilling water activities like boating in the pristine, shallow waters, which gave us an adrenaline rush.
We could also trek through the dense forests to find hidden waterfalls and natural pools, all while soaking in the stunning scenery. During our visit in 2018, we mostly enjoyed playing in the sand and water and strolling along the riverbanks, as there were no kayaking or other water sports available back then.
As the sun set over the island, casting a golden glow on the meadows, we were in awe of the beautiful scene unfolding before us. The serene atmosphere and untouched beauty of Nongkhnum River Island made for an unforgettable experience, leaving lasting memories etched deep in our hearts.
As our road trip to Nongkhnum River Island comes to an end, we reflect on all the wonders we’ve experienced. This journey into Meghalaya's hidden paradise has been a true exploration of nature's beauty and the rich culture of the region. With hearts full of gratitude and a deeper appreciation for the world around us, we say goodbye to this enchanting island, taking with us memories that will last a lifetime.
Nongkhnum may be remote, but it’s definitely a must-visit spot in Meghalaya!
