There's something undeniably captivating about going on a road trip—it's all about adventure and discovering cool places! In the beautiful state of Meghalaya, India, there’s a stunning spot that travelers love: the amazing Laitlum Canyons.
Driving from Shillong to Laitlum Canyons is a must-do for anyone who loves nature. It’s about 25 kilometers away and takes around 45 minutes to an hour to get there, depending on traffic. The drive is gorgeous, with lush green hills and valleys on both sides, making it a fun and scenic journey!
We set off around 2 PM, feeling the excitement as we left Shillong. The winding roads welcomed us, taking us through the lush green hills of Meghalaya. The drive was like a feast for the eyes, with each turn offering stunning views of valleys, sparkling waterfalls, and thick forests. After a couple of hours, we arrived in Smit, a charming village known for its lively local culture.
The best time to visit Laitlum Canyons is usually from November to March when the weather is nice and the views are clear. However, that day in May was quite chilly. As we arrived at the parking area, we felt the cold breeze against our skin.
There are several trekking options available. You can take a short trek to the viewpoint for stunning views of the valley below or choose a longer trek that leads you deeper into the canyon. The trails are well-marked, and you can hire a guide if you want.
We parked our car and took a leisurely 15-minute walk to the viewpoint. It was an easy stroll, and when we reached the top, we were greeted by an incredible sight. The Laitlum Canyons stretched out before us—rugged cliffs shaped by time and nature. The steep drop-offs and lush valley below left us speechless. We couldn’t help but admire this masterpiece of Mother Nature. Laitlum means "end of hills," and it truly lives up to its name. This stunning hilltop is like nature's amphitheater, where you can gaze at the endless horizon of green hills and gorges. The vibrant valleys, rolling hills, fluffy clouds, and shining sun created a surreal scene that was simply mesmerizing.
We had the pleasure of indulging delicious snacks (momos, corn bhutta, tea, chips, etc) from local hawkers. We took lots of pictures, spent quality time with friends and family, and soaked in the incredible beauty of the canyons. It was a perfect blend of fun and relaxation!
A road trip from Shillong to Laitlum Canyons is an adventure that truly captures the spirit of exploration and the stunning beauty of Meghalaya. It takes you off the usual path and lets you connect with nature at its best.
On our way back to Shillong, we felt so grateful for the chance to experience the wonder of Laitlum Canyons. The memories we created and the amazing views we saw will always have a special place in our hearts.
